Open Forum: Introductions
When it comes to ensuring accessibility levels of course unit content, the OCA's TEL Team can provide that service as part of the final Quality Assurance checks made to learning materials before they are published. However, to ensure a new course unit can be launched quickly, there are some measures Course Developers are asked to take on board.
When it comes to ensuring accessibility levels of course unit content, the OCA's TEL Team can provide that service as part of the final Quality Assurance checks made to learning materials before they are published. However, to ensure a new course unit can be launched quickly, there are some measures Course Developers are asked to take on board.
We ask that all written course unit learning materials be structured according to an accessible hierarchy. This means that all headings used within a document should use the pre-defined headings, rather than manually altered text sizes and weight, and that those headings should always follow a logical order. A 'Heading 3' should never be used without a 'Heading 2' preceding it, for example. This is necessary, because Headings are used by screen readers as a navigation aid; when headings begin to follow a less logical order, it can confuse the navigation experience for a student or tutor reliant upon assistive screen reader technology.
In addition, images used in learning materials should always be provided along with a description of what the image is portraying. Again, the TEL Team can fill in some gaps at the end of the Course Development process, but a TEL Team member may not have the background knowledge necessary to provide an accurate description of the images provided.
An Assignment Activity
This is an assignment activity. These will be common across most if not all courses in the VLE. As well as being a mechanism for students to submit their assignment work to their tutor (or notify that they have sent it by post), they can also be used for other reasons. For example, instead of asking students to Email their student profile to their tutor at the outset of a course, an Assignment can be created, asking the student to submit their profile/introduction that way instead. They may even choose to send it as an audio file or video, depending upon preference or ability.
For this assignment, write up a summary of your day so far, as a Haiku (5-7-5 syllables) - you can either upload a file or type it into the field provided.
